Phoenix, Arizona General Information


Situated in the southwestern part of the United States, Phoenix is Arizona’s capitol and the fifth largest city in the United States, with more than 1.5 million residents and growing. Locals call the area "The Valley of the Sun".  The city takes up more than 500 square miles, geographically exceeding Los Angeles. Phoenix has more than 300 sunny days a year and an average temperature of 74 degrees – an unbeatable combination that has made the city a prime destination for tourists, business and industry. Attractions
There are limitless possibilities in Phoenix, the city known as the heart of the American Southwest. Among the many places to visit is the Arizona Science Center which has a planetarium and IMAX theater. Also, the Desert Botanical Garden allows visitors to examine the Sonoran desert fauna up close. You can experience Native American culture at the Heard Museum, home to world famous exhibits. Travel to the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park to learn about the ancient Hohokam who were the region’s first inhabitants. Finally, on the first Friday of every month, a number of art galleries are open free to the public. This large art walk has become a city favorite.

Education
Over 30 school districts serve the Greater Phoenix area. The Phoenix Union High School District alone operates 10 high schools. The University of Arizona is the primary source for higher education in the area with nearby campuses in Tempe, Northwest Phoenix, Downtown Phoenix, and Mesa. Students also attend the 10 community colleges in Maricopa County. Grand Canyon University, the nation’s sole private, for-profit, Christian institution is also located in the city.

Recreation
The city is a haven for professional sports fans. The Arizona Diamondbacks (baseball), Phoenix Suns (basketball), Arizona Cardinals (football), and Phoenix Coyotes (hockey) are all located in the area. The city also has plenty of opportunities for those who enjoy the outdoors. South Mountain Park, the world's largest municipal park, was established to preserve the natural desert environment. Kids will love Castles N' Coasters, Phoenix’s amusement park. For the ultimate experience, check out the Grand Canyon, a 4-hour drive from the city.
